As Confederate General Heth and his division advanced through the outskirts of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 they ran headlong into what they thought was an entire Union division due to the volume of firepower they were encountering. Little did they know it was only a brigade of Union cavalry under the command of General John Buford. These troopers were armed with Sharps rifles which allowed them to reload and fire at an astonishing rate.
