W. Britain, Matte Finish #17262 Marshal Michel Ney

At the beginning of the 1812 Russian Campaign, Marshal Ney was given command of the III Corps. He fought at Krasnoya, Smolensk and before Moscow in the great battle of Borodino. Perhaps Ney's greatest achievement was during the disastrous retreat from Russia where, against all odds and the extremes of winter weather, he managed to bring up the rear guard and be the last man to leave Russian soil. This moved Napoleon to confer upon Ney a title that had never been given before: Le Brave des Braves - "The Bravest of the Brave." In the German Campaign of 1813, Ney continued to lead at Lutzen, Bautzen and the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig where he was wounded and unhorsed twice. The following spring when Napoleon was completely surrounded, Ney became a spokesman for the marshalate in demanding the Emperor's abdication.
