After the initial success of the ambush, the Rangers were taken by
surprise by the second force of 300 French and Canadians under Langy.
The Rangers now finding themselves outnumbered fell back to the more
advantageous higher ground, where they were to temporarily stop the
French counter attack.
As the battle continued and darkness approached, Langy new he had to
press the French attack before it was too late. Rogers knowing he would
be overwhelmed, reluctantly gave the order to run for it! Given no
need for further prodding the surviving Rangers were to flee, dispersing
in groups of two and threes for the safety of their base camp at the
lake four miles away.
