The Natal Carabiniers were one of the oldest Colonial units serving in the Rorke's Drift conflict. They were established in 1855 with its headquarters in Pietermaritzburg, the Colonial capital.
The 17th Lancers were sent to Natal Colony for the Zulu War and were used for scouting and screening. Later on July 4, 1879, the 17th fought at the Battle of Ulundi under Sir Drury Curzon Drury-Lowe and played an important part in the defeat of the Zulu forces there.
