During the American Civil War, each gun in a light artillery battery was moved by a 6 Horse team connected to a limber. These limbers had an ammunition chest that doubled as a seat for members of the crew when on the move. This wooden chest contained ammunition, friction primers and the tools needed to set fuses, clear vents and if needed, spike the guns. The leather belts and fuse boxes for the crew were also carried in the tray in the chest.
The same pattern limber was used for all of the field artillery guns in service during the war on both sides.
This model is inspired by scale drawings prepared from surviving examples.
