The Corsair was one of the most numerous fighters that served in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during WWII, with no less than one thousand, nine hundred and seventy seven aircraft equipping nineteen FAA Squadrons and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. No. 1850 Squadron formed at Brunswick on 1 st August 1944 as a single seater fighter squadron. Equipped with eighteen Corsair IVs. it sailed for the UK in HMS Reaper in November. After work-up and deck landing practice in HMS Vengeance in February 1945. the squadron joined this aircraft carrier for the British Pacific Fleet. After weapon training and dive bombing practice in southern India, it re-embarked and the ship entered the war zone in August to join others in operations against the Japanese, but it was too late to take an active part. A preserved example currently flies in these colours with The Fighter Collection from the Imperial War Museum's airfield at Duxford, Cambridgeshire.
