This gentleman wears the most recent fashion of the last quarter of the 18th century, including a fine hat cocked in the current style with the front leaves in more vertical style than worn earlier in the century. Men’s hair was still worn long, with the side locks curled over the ears and the back either clubbed or worn in a silk bag tied with a ribbon. Some gentlemen preferred to cut their hair short so a wig could be worn when in public. The coat and vest are also cut in the latest style, more form fitting than the garments worn just a few decades earlier. He stands with his hands resting on the back a Chippendale style side chair intently listening, but to what? Perhaps it is latest political news or even local gossip, but it is just as likely to be poetry being read, or music played on a pianoforte.
