Sir John Chandos confronted the French Lord Clermont before the battle of Poitiers, and traded insults over who had the true right to wear the emblem of the VIRGIN on his sleeve. Always at the Black Prince's side, a trusted and able leader. It was he who advised the Price to mount the reserves and attach directly the "battle" (battalion) of King Jean which had just entered the field. Although the first waves of French were beaten back and dispersing, Chandos knew that a major strike at the King could seal the victory before the French would rally around him. His speech in effect was "...for where he is, lied victory".
Sir John also had another distinction: following the major battles. Twice he captured and ransomed the legendary French military leader Bertrand de Guesclin.
