The New Orleans Greys were a volunteer military unit of two militia companies that totaled about 120 men and would serve in the Texas War of Independence. Its name came from its soldiers’ grey military uniforms. 54 men served in the first company under Captain Thomas H. Breece and 68 men in the second company under Captain Robert C. Morris. These men, as well as several companies of Texicans who had recently arrived, were eager to face the Mexican Army directly at the Alamo. 23 Greys would die at the Battle of the Alamo. The Greys would also fight and die at the Siege of Bexar, the Goliad Campaign, and the Battle of San Jacinto.
