The Knights Templar, or, by their full name, the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, were formed in approximately 1119 to defend Christian pilgrims as they traveled around the Holy Land. Headquartered on the Temple Mount, they offered protection to pilgrims throughout the Outremer and were often the shock troops in many battles of the Crusades. While beginning as an impoverished organization (their symbol shows two knights on a single horse), this soon changed as the order amassed great wealth and even engaged in lending, which perhaps was the cause of their eventual downfall. They were guided in all things by the rule of their order, the Latin Rule, which even dictated that they must at all times wear their famous dress, a white surcoat with a red cross.
