The Imperial Guard contained elements of infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments, as well as battalions of sappers and marines. Napoleon took great care of his Guard; they received better pay, rations, quarters, and equipment, and all the guard ranked one grade higher than all non-Imperial Guard soldiers. They were used sparingly in battle where they were most often used as a tactical reserve but conversely were also deployed as shock troops when needed. Indeed, the imposing stature of the men, their technical precision, and courage under fire made these battle-hardened veterans the elite fighting force of the day.
