For soldiers cooped up in the isolated garrison forts in the wilderness there was little to do in the off-duty hours but eat, sleep, gamble and drink! Certainly, playing cards and dicing for money topped the list of favorite off-duty pastimes for soldiers shut up in frontier garrisons, especially on the rare occasions they were actually paid!
At Fort Stanwix during the winter of 1758-59, The local Major was disturbed to learn “that their’s a great deal of gaming among the men both in the barracks and the Guard room by which there is a good deal of money loss’d and gaind.” The Major had to strictly forbade such gambling practices and told sergeants and corporals to clamp down or be “Sivirly Punished”, and put under arrest themselves.
