First Legion
The Renaissance is a fascinating period of history, spanning roughly from the 14th-17th Centuries. There was resurgence in art, science, exploration, and literature. The Renaissance wasn’t all strides forward, as the great European powers fought for dominance of the continent and their militaries clashed. The use of gunpowder and cannon became normal, alongside heavy cavalry and foot soldiers. As such, it is typically referred to as the "Age of Pike and Shot" as the pike and musket were the most common weapons in army formations.
First Legion will create figures extensively for the Renaissance, and launched the REN range with the Battle of Pavia in 1525. It was a battle of the Italian Wars between France and the Spanish Empire, a battle which solidified Spanish rule of the Italian States for 200 years. REN001-REN030 are incredibly detailed, hand painted military miniatures that depict the colorful German mercenaries, called Landsknechts. Pike squares were also used by the Swiss mercenaries of the time, and these figures could stand in for them as well. Landsknechts and Swiss pikemen clashed throughout the Italian Wars.
